Towards remote surveillance of marine pests: A comparison between remote operated vehicles and diver surveys

Early detection of marine invasive species is key for mitigating and managing their impacts to ecosystems industries. Human divers are considered the gold standard tool detecting species, especially when dive teams familiar with local biodiversity. However, diver operations can be expensive dangerous, not always practical. Remote operated vehicles (ROVs) potentially overcome these limitations, but it unclear how sensitive they compared trained pests. We assessed sensitivity efficiency ROVs non-indigenous (NIS), including potential automated algorithms reduce post-processing costs ROV methods. show that detect comparable assemblages as divers, lower rates (0.2 NIS min -1 ) than (0.5 covered less seafloor per unit time.
